In the Blood

Motorbikes I suppose were in the blood, my Dad had owned a BSA, an Ambassador and his pride a Norton 16H. One of my Uncles raced bikes (I got his Lewis Leathers when he stopped). As soon as I was legally able to ride, I talked my parents into letting me have a moped. No sexy race replicas available like today, oh no, this was a Raleigh Runabout, 50cc two stroke, 6v electrics, belt drive and 200 miles to the gallon, if you could keep it running that long..........

..........I went everywhere on the Runabout, through all seasons and weather, often dealing with a soaking wet drive belt or crappy electrics. I had the spark plug out and back again so many times I should have created a snap fit to ease the task. In case you are wondering, taking the plug out, blowing on it and putting it back, fixed most firing problems. That and shaking the tank like a lunatic to mix the 2-stroke oil with the petrol.

Of course when I was very young, 3 wheels were considered a little safer, but I still took it seriously, check out that look !
