Down Under

Around the 1950´s, to boost the working population of Australia, an assisted passage migration scheme was in force. For a few quid one could emigrate to Australia and start a new and hopefully prosperous life. So in 1961 we became what was colloquially referred to as 10 pound POM´s!

It was another world really, yes it offered opportunities, but they weren´t just handed out on a plate, you had to work for them. A multitude of incidents and excitement, from snakes to "stingers" to red back spiders, from tropics to temperate climates, from cyclones to droughts, Australia has it all. My parents opted for the seasonal work approach to establish us in this new land, and that meant moving, moving, moving. It wasn´t until our last 4 years that we settled into a house and made roots. 1972 saw us moving again however, this time back to England.
