the Andrew

Something else that was in the blood, a love of ships and the sea! My Dad had been in the Merchant Navy towards the end of the war, At 22 I went into the Royal Navy (also known as "the Andrew"). It´s not everyone´s cup of tea, spending weeks or months avoiding land and braving choppy seas. Most people feel apprehensive the moment they step on deck. What for some people is uncomfortable noise and stink, for sailors is the secure feeling that they are back home, on board!

It was not all business, one of the lighter moments was the "Sod´s Opera", a chance to display your song and sketch writing talents, usually having a dig at Navy life and some of the ship´s senior staff. It does help to relieve the pressure, and providing it stays as fun, and not outright insulting, the limits of what is taboo, can be pushed quite a way.
